Lombardy is located in the very North of Italy. The regional capital is Milan, the industrial centre of Italy – which is also an important winegrowing region. The landscape is characterised by the central Padan Plain and the large Italian lakes: Lago Maggiore, Lake Garda, Lake Lugano, Lake Como and Lago di Iseo. The viticultural conditions on the plain are not ideal – hot summers, cold winters and high humidity. Yet the winegrowing regions close to the lakes are a wonder of nature. This is due to the climatic conditions: The Alps protect against the cool winds from the North, and the lakes have a positive influence on the microclimate, which has a Mediterranean touch here and there. Along with the climate, the calcareous limestone and sandy soils from glacier deposits constitute the best conditions for quality wines to thrive – accordingly, Lombardy produces magnificent elegant wines each year.
