Provence

The Provence extends from Avignon to the Maritime Alps. It is known for its lavender fields, its warm, mild climate – and for fresh, delicate Rosé wines. The region’s name is derived from the Latin “Provincia”. The region “Provincia Narbonensis” in the very South-East of the country was one of the first and most Romanised regions outside of Italy. The little town of Arles was an important centre of commerce. Long, dry summers with up to 3000 hours of sunlight per year render the Provence the perfect location for viticulture. Along with rather strong winds, among them the well-known Mistral, this helps guard against grapevine diseases. In the mild climate of the popular French holiday region, fish and vegetables can be enjoyed in the shade of willowing trees and pleasant breezes: together with a Petit Farcis or Bouillabaisse.
