Region

Wellington

Wellington is one of South Africa’s most important and fastest-growing viticultural regions. It is located in the far South, in the heart of the Cape winegrowing region, some 60 kilometres from Cape Town and the ocean. For more than 100 years, the amicable Mediterranean climate has favoured viticulture on the gentle slopes – but the big break came in the 1940s. Supported by the mountains, diverse soils ranging from granite to limestone continue to provide an environment for vines to produce concentrated aromatic, fresh and elegant wines. The main types of vine include Pinotage and Chenin Blanc. Other vine types such as Shiraz, Cabernet and Viognier are also grown.

Producer/Brand

Diemersfontein

Vines have been growing on Diemersfontein since the early 1970s. However, quality wines have only been produced since 2001, the time when the current owner David Sonnenberg set up a winery. Diemersfontein wines immediately received international recognition and praise, and the first vintage won the Paul Sauer Trophy for the best wood-ripened Pinotage at the South African Young Wine Show. Today, Diemersfontein wines are present worldwide and regularly receive high ratings at wine competitions and in trade journals. The wine estate itself is also an inn for those who need a holiday.
