Region

Sardinien

Sardinia, Italy’s second-largest island, has known wine for a long time. Cultures such as the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Spanish have left their mark here, giving rise to a large variety of vines. Historically, linguistically and culturally, Sardinia seems to have an identity separate from that of Italy. Hence it comes as no surprise that most of the important vine types are of Spanish origin. In Sardinia we find a large number of grapevine varieties that are as independent-minded as the Sardinians themselves. A growing number of vintners are pressing very individual wines, great wines in fact, which are now an insiders’ tip for connoisseurs. Generally, the Mediterranean climate affects Sardinia: the North is rather cool and the southern coast very dry. Soils in the interior of the island are somewhat clayey, while those along the coasts tend to be rather sandy.
