Bodegas Volver

During a time when the world only thought of Rioja wines in terms of a Spanish wine phenomenon, the visionaries Jorge Ordoñez and Rafael Cañizares looked into cultivating old, abandoned vineyards in previously unknown cultivation areas, in order to revive local grape varieties and to reposition Spanish quality wines in 2004. Traditional viticulture is the quality seal of Bodegas Volver S.L. The establishment currently produces its wines from the grapes of 30 to 90 year old vineyards within the protected cultivation areas of DO Jumilla, DO Castilla la Mancha and DO Alicante.

Region

Alicante

In the winegrowing region of Alicante south of Valencia – as in the whole of the Levante – from the 16th century onward vines were planted mainly near the coast. At the time of the vine pest, winegrowing was relocated 40 to 50 kilometres into the hilly interior of the countries. At an altitude of 500 m a.s.l. there is a moderate continental climate with greater temperature differences than on the peninsula of Denia and the vineyards close to Alicante with its mild Mediterranean climate. Close to the coastline, fresh wines are pressed from the Monastrell grape, the most cultivated vine, which are drunk best when they are young. The climate in the lower planes of the peninsula is also suitable for sweet wines. The soils are as diverse as the climate. Calcareous sandy and limestone soils dominate the hinterland, in the valley basins the soils are looser but very deep.
