Region

Sizilien

As Italy’s largest winegrowing region, the island of Sicily is parked at the extreme point of Italy’s boot-like shape. The island is destined for winegrowing: its climate is influenced by severe summer heat and low precipitation, in the South with African influence – its topography marked by mountainous terrain with lean soils. These natural advantages yield abundant benefits for the vineyards: hillside locations with excellent alignment, lots of sunlight, ideal altitudes with significant differences in day-time and night-time temperatures, as well as an entire array of indigenous vine types. The soils vary from region to region: the West is host to very lean soils of volcanic origin. It comes as no surprise that the most desirable sites for intense, dark-red and fruity wines are to be found on the slopes of Mount Etna. Other regions with sandy soils are high in iron content. Supported by a limestone substratum, they lend the wines a fresh mineral touch.
